What nullfte is

nullfte is for the person who has to sign for what an agent does. The owner of a fifteen-person company. The head of a division of fifteen hundred. Same decision, different budget.

It started in March 2026 as an experiment: one Mac Mini, €10,000, six months, and a question. Can a company run with zero employees? The experiment ended in April, when the agents moved into my real company instead, one job at a time, each time a person was missing. Since then the question has changed. Not whether a company can run without people, but which jobs still need one, and why.

This site is where I work that out in the open. Each job gets its own piece: what the agent does in a normal week, what it may do on its own, where it got it wrong, what it costs, and who answers. Behind the jobs sit three questions that keep returning: why have a firm at all, why a human, and where exactly the line goes between what an agent may do and what a person must. I take those questions seriously, with the thinking that already exists, from Coase onward, set next to what I see in my company every week.

Two rules for everything here. Every claim says where it comes from: my own account, a published source, or a record. And when I do not know, I say so. The world is changing faster than most of us can follow. This is one small piece of it, written down as it happens.

The pieces appear here first and by email after. The book they add up to, The Last Human in the Loop, is being written in the open.

What it means

Why a firm? →

Agents change both what it costs to do work inside a company and what it costs to buy it, so where a company ends is moving. The theory does not say in which direction.

Why a human? →

In my company many enabling jobs are now done by agents. In every one of them, a person still sends, pays and talks to people.

Why this boundary? →

So far the line holds in the same place in every job: the agent drafts, proposes, builds and checks; a person sends, pays and talks to people.

The jobs so far →

How I decide what an agent may do →

Three lines before a job is handed over: what the agent may do, what it is responsible for, and who answers. I first wrote them for the audit agent.
