The obligation to get a piece of work done and deliver the result. It can be handed to an agent.

Not to be confused with
- Accountability: answering for the outcome; it stays with a person.
- Authority: what may be done, not what is owed.
Example. The audit agent was responsible for having our documents in order, not just for editing them when asked.
